Botox is a powerful chemical, extracted and medically processed from botulinum toxin produced by a bacteria.  This toxin is a paralytic, and its function is to paralyze the muscles into which it is injected.  Patients present to the office, complaining of an angry look, or wrinkles they desire eliminated.  There are multiple facial muscles that give us the ability to express our thoughts.  Skin wrinkles are produced when the underlying muscle contracts.  Over time, these wrinkles can become deeper and worse.  Botox will temporarily paralyze certain muscles to eradicate these dynamic wrinkles.  Recently, the FDA has approved Botox for use with treatment of headaches caused by migraines.  It has been shown to significantly improve migraine headaches and decrease the number of attaches.  Botox is injected around the nerve fibers that trigger these headaches and prevents them from firing.  Botox has also recently been used to treat gummy smiles and to prevent significant laugh lines.  After treatment, patients comment on the improved, rejuvenated appearance, and that friends say they look refreshed and more energetic with an improved self-image.

Depending on which areas you desire treatment, Botox can be injected into the muscles of the forehead, glabella (between the eyebrows, muscles of angry expression), and eyelids (crow’s feet). The procedure only takes a few minutes to complete and you can return to daily activities immediately.  For headaches, Botox is injected around the nerve fibers that give sensation to the region of pain.  During your consultation, Dr. Tsai will present you with all the possible options in detail and work with you to individualize treatment according to your specific goals and expectations to provide you with the best possible result.  Recommendation includes no heavy lifting or strenuous activities (no exercise) for 4 hours and no hot bath that night (shower is okay) as this can disperse Botox.  Occasionally there maybe mild bruising at the injection site but this is normal and will disappear in several days.  It typically takes 3-4 days after the procedure to begin noticing any changes.  Results last for approximately 4 months.  Treatment can be performed again once results dissipate and can be repeated as often as you desire.
